Choosing a Dental Chair

How do you disinfect a dental unit?

If you are Choosing a Dental Chair, we recommend you to read that article. Buying dental equipment is an important investment. With so many options available, it’s important to closely examine reliability, longevity, performance, and other critical factors. Regardless of brand or manufacturer, there are some key features that enable a dental chair to withstand the daily rigors of dentistry, maximize patient access and provide comfort for both the dental team and the patient.

Here are five key points to consider when purchasing a new dental chair:

1. How sturdy is the dental unit?

Stability requirements will vary depending on the type of equipment you use. Chair-mount distribution systems require a much more robust chair than cabinet or wall-mount systems. Still, a chair should provide stability when accessing the oral cavity.

A practical stability test in a chair with seat-mounted distribution system and light, sitting on level ground: With a person in the supine position, operate the chair to its maximum height. Grasp the top of the light post and try to rock the chair from side to side. The patient’s sitting area should not wobble and should remain basically stable. The base plate should not wobble at all. “Tippy” chairs may not be capable of maintaining a stable oral cavity.

The seat base plate is an important factor in stability. It should have a wide footprint, but be configured so that it does not block the stool wheels. The cast iron baseplate is tough and provides more strength than aluminum with a thinner profile. It should also transmit less noise and vibration to the patient when bumped or bumped.

2. Is the base plate resistant to dents, scratches and corrosion?

The base plate of the chair is under constant attack from cleaning chemicals and equipment. The coating should not simply be painted as it will chip or scratch easily. A permanent finish like epoxy or electrolytic bonding is ideal to keep it looking clean and new for years. Additionally, all sides of the base plate must be polished so that the floor coverings are not damaged by rust or corrosion.

3. How does the Denatl unit chair move and feel?

The movement of the chair plays a major role in patient comfort. Sit in the chair, then move the chair up and down to determine if it’s a jarring motion at takeoff or stance. The chair should provide a smooth ride for the patient from start to finish. (Be sure to ask who manufactured the hydraulic cylinders, which are an important part of the chair.) A well-designed chair will support the patient’s body for a comfortable experience. Does the baseboard lift at the same time you lean to raise the legs? Is there a “virtual pivot” that automatically synchronizes chair movement with the body’s natural movement, allowing the patient to reach the supine position without flexing or repositioning?

4. How easy is it to install the chair?

Correct positioning is important for patient comfort and optimal oral cavity access, so consider every aspect. A headrest that automatically follows the patient’s movement when the backrest is raised or lowered means less adjustment for you and more comfort for the patient. Ideally, you should be able to easily reposition the headrest by activating the adjustment mechanism with your thumb and forefinger. Button-operated headrests are more difficult to adjust, especially when covered with plastic barrier protection.

Next, evaluate the flexibility of the backrest. An ultra-thin (but sturdy enough) backrest offers more legroom, allowing you to position the oral cavity a few inches lower and closer to your lap. This position minimizes arm and shoulder strain, allowing you to work with forearms parallel to the floor. A thin, properly designed backrest also absorbs pressure and supports the patient as they enter and exit the seat. Finally, the armrests should be easily operated with one hand, allowing direct and unhindered access to the patient, as well as easy entry and exit from both sides of the chair.

Is the Dental Patient Chair built to last?

When your equipment is not working, you are not working; unexpected problems and excessive maintenance can mean costly service calls and lost productivity. Whenever possible, choose products that require the least maintenance and service. A chair designed with fewer moving parts is a smart choice as it reduces the risk of breakdowns, simplifies maintenance and results in fewer service calls.
